Volunteer Opportunities

The Elon chapter of Habitat for Humanity provides many opportunities for students to engage in community service that immediately benefits the community surrounding campus.

Build-Sites

Every year, our chapter sponsors the construction of a house in Burlington through fundraising, and students are encouraged to volunteer at the build site to get a hands-on experience in community building. Build shifts are not only educational, but also fun! Volunteers learn the value of teamwork, leadership, and hard work while also getting to learn new skills in home construction. Some examples of build-site tasks include putting up walls, painting, roofing, and more!

Build shifts are Saturday mornings from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. No building/construction experience is necessary. Just come ready to make a difference and have some fun!

ReStore Shifts

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Burlington Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a home improvement store off of North Church Street. The ReStore sells donated new or lightly-used furniture, appliances, decor, and more for an affordable price. Proceeds from the ReStore go towards building more Habitat homes in the area and is the largest source of funding they receive to support the cost of new homes. Tasks for volunteers include (but are not limited to) organizing, cleaning, and pricing inventory.

Volunteer shifts at the ReStore are on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Helpful Information for Volunteers

SHIFT CAPTAINS: There will be a shift captain, a Habitat campus chapter leader,  for every shift at both build-sites and the ReStore. The name and contact information for your shift captain will be on the Google Spreadsheet where you signed up.

SIGNING UP: We release shift sign-ups each month to our listserv. To join our listserv, email habitat@elon.edu. When shifts fill up, we offer a waitlist. If you cannot make your shift, please take your name off of the sign up Google Doc at least 48 hours before the shift begins so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waitlist.

WHERE & WHEN TO MEET: We ask that all of our volunteers show up ready to go at their designated meeting spot, Boney Fountain by the entrance of McKinnon, at least 30 minutes before their shift begins (i.e. build-shift volunteers should be at Boney fountain at 7:30 am).

TRANSPORTATION: We understand that not everyone has a car, and transportation will be provided. Communicate with your captain about ride/driving details.

WHAT TO WEAR: For Build-shifts, closed toed shoes are required and long pants are highly recommended. We also advise that you wear warm layers, as the early mornings can be chilly. Don’t wear anything you wouldn’t want to get dirty! For the ReStore, closed toed shoes are recommended.
