Julia Burpeau

As a member of the graduating class of 2024 from Elon University, I completed my major in
Exercise Science with a minor in Public Health Studies and am excited to embark on my
professional journey with Cone Health as the Elon Year of Service Fellow! This fellowship
perfectly aligns with my academic pursuits and passion for healthcare.

During my time at Elon, I engaged in undergraduate research within the Exercise Science Department. My research focused on critical aspects of health such as body composition, bone health, and fasted insulin levels during the pivotal transition from high school to college. This experience allowed me to enhance my analytical skills and deepen my understanding of adolescent health challenges.

I have also served as an Organic Chemistry teaching assistant, providing support and guidance to my fellow students. As a member of Kappa Delta sorority, I fostered strong community bonds and lifelong friendships. Additionally, I worked as a student leader with Campus Outreach, engaging and connecting with others on campus spiritually.

In January 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Italy, where I learned about
the Italian healthcare system and its interplay with Italian art. This unique experience gave me a
more global perspective on healthcare delivery and cultural influences on health practices.
Throughout my senior year, I worked with the local community as a workout instructor at
Burlington Homes. I developed and led weekly strength and aerobic workout classes and
introduced a resistance Gwee Gym program, enhancing the residents’ fitness and well-being
while listening to their needs and wants for the workout program.

I am eager to join Cone Health, where I will gain invaluable insights into the business and
administrative facets of medicine. My passion for proactive and holistic healthcare aligns with
Cone Health’s mission, and I look forward to contributing to and learning from their innovative
patient care approaches. I am committed to making a positive impact in the healthcare field,
embodying the values and skills I cultivated at Elon University and working collaboratively with
Cone Health.

Nicole McGinty

Hi, I’m Nicole and in May 2024 I graduated from Elon University summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Health, with minors in Statistics and Wellness and Health Education. While at Elon, I was heavily involved with the Kernodle Center for Civic Life and Elon Volunteers! and served over 600 hours in the community whether that was at Loy Farm, the CityGate Dream Center, It Takes a Village Project or Rise Against Hunger.

In addition to volunteering, I held various leadership roles within the Kernodle Center, leading 3 Alternative Breaks, serving as the CityGate Dream Center coordinator my sophomore year, and the Executive Director of Education and Community Engagement my junior and senior year.

When not at the Kernodle Center, I was playing frisbee on the women’s club ultimate team or working as a personal trainer with RecWell. I also love to travel and learn about other cultures; I traveled throughout Italy during J-term my sophomore year as a teaching assistant with the honors program and my junior year I had an exceptional experience fulfilling my public health practicum in rural India while learning about the Comprehensive Rural Health Project. Additionally, throughout my final two years I worked on my honors thesis project titled “Putting Knowledge into Action with Dream Center Girls in Motion (DC-GIM), a Health Intervention for Girls Aged 8-12”.

I am passionate about health and well-being for myself and others and have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering my time in Alamance County. After hearing about the experiences of the other fellows I knew the Elon Year of Service was the perfect fit for me post-grad. While at Impact Alamance, I look forward to the mentorship and working towards Impact Alamance’s goal to create a healthier, smarter, and stronger Alamance County.  My focus area is working toward both individual health and our community’s collective well-being. I can’t wait to start!

Frieda Walsh-Seaman

My name is Frieda Walsh and I have a passion for women’s healthcare. I pursued a major in biology with a pre-med track and a minor in anthropology during my time at Elon. During my academic journey, I took the initiative to start a podcast that highlights the achievements of biology alumni. Additionally, I built a network and website to connect students and showcase the accomplishments of scientific alumni.

One of my notable experiences was conducting research on the role of comic books in higher education. I had the opportunity to co-teach a class that was based on comics, which allowed me to explore the intersection of popular culture and education, expanding accessibility of learning mediums. I also participated in the SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) program, where I conducted research on the correlation between birth control methods and heart rate variability.

Looking ahead, I am excited to deepen my connection with the greater Alamance County area and further expand my knowledge in the field of public health and medicine. I am eager to explore the inter-workings of these two disciplines and make a positive impact in improving the health and well-being of the community.
