Elon Year of Service Fellows Program

The Elon Year of Service Fellows program is a partnership between Elon University and several organizations in Alamance County, which offers recent Elon graduates the opportunity to engage in meaningful service work to improve the health, education, and economic well-being of residents in Alamance County.

Service Options

1) Work within one of six community partner organizations

There are six position openings for this service option. Placements include Alamance Achieves, Alamance County Health Department, Cone Health/ARMC, Economic Development Department, City of Burlington, Harwood Institute, and Impact Alamance. These Fellows are considered Elon University nonexempt paid employees and given a contract for the one-year fellowship. In addition, they are entitled to all of the benefits, including the option to participate in health insurance, available to a full-time Elon University employee.

Throughout their year of service, the Fellows receive strong mentorship from their site supervisors and Elon faculty mentors, as well as access to professional development opportunities. Participants are also eligible for an incentive stipend at the completion of the one-year program if they attend graduate school in North Carolina or accept employment in Alamance County or a surrounding county.

2) Teach within Alamance Burlington Schools (ABSS)

Teach for Alamance Service Fellows Program is a 24-month, post-graduation program connecting Elon graduates with Alamance Burlington Schools (ABSS) to be hired as a teacher (under the residency license) who helps to support middle and secondary education needs in the county. This program is targeted toward undergraduate students who do not have their teaching license but aspire to teach in middle or high schools K-12. Candidates must have completed 24 credit hours in the discipline they wish to teach.

Eligibility is dependent upon being hired under the Residency License Program with ABSS. During the fellowship, Elon University will provide Teach for Alamance Service Fellows with financial support to earn their teacher licensure. Additionally, these Service Fellows will receive a small stipend each year.  Annual salary and benefits will be handled through ABSS.

Elon Fellowship at Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP)

In partnership with CRHP in Jamkhed, India, the Periclean Scholars Class of 2012 inaugurated the Elon Fellow program, now in its third year. Each spring, an Elon University graduating senior who demonstrates interest in and commitment to international healthcare and development is selected to participate in a one-year post-graduate position at CRHP. The Elon Fellow works closely with the senior staff at CRHP on a range of projects including program organization and assessment, grant writing, and staff education. Additionally, the Fellow will have extensive exposure to CRHP’s community programs, on-site hospital, organic farm and rehabilitation center, and training in community health and development, according to their individual interests. The leadership at CRHP has described this relationship as extraordinarily useful and productive and has committed to providing room and board for the Elon Fellow annually.

Peace Corps Prep Program

The Peace Corps Prep Program is a formal cooperative agreement between Elon University and the Peace Corps.  The Elon program is housed in the Environmental Studies Department and focuses on helping students develop skills in sustainable agriculture, responsible architecture and environmental management. Students participating in the program will gain skills which are an advantage in the competitive Peace Corps application process and in other international development work.
