FERPA and Parent Communication
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. §1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a students education records. The law applies to app schools that receive funds under an applicable program with the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA prohibits the sharing of a students education records with a family member, guardian, or other individual, without written permission by the student.
If students would like the University to be able to openly discuss a student conduct case with a family member, guardian, or other individual, the student will need to complete a FERPA release to provide written permission. The FERPA form is available here, or on the registrar’s website.
The Student Conduct office believes that student participation is an integral part of the learning and growth that occurs throughout the student conduct process. In line with that philosophy, our office asks that students be involved in all parent communication. If a parent or guardian would like to speak with a member of our team about their student, it is requested that the student join that conversation to encourage transparency and integrity.
