Elon Hillel’s Inclusive Community
At Elon Hillel we recognize that we are all JewishAND. What do we mean by JewishAND? Identity isn’t simple. Most of us have multiple, overlapping identities.
Some of us are JewishAND Queer.
Others are JewishAND Latinx/Hispanic.
Others are JewishAND Black.
Others are JewishAND Agnostic.
Others are JewishAND Autistic.
And still others are many of the above and more. We all have many ANDs.
You and all your ANDs are welcome at Hillel… because y’all means all.
At Elon Hillel, it doesn’t matter how you are Jewish or how Jewish you are. You are always welcome. We strive for a judgment-free zone where everyone is seen, heard, and respected. At Hillel, we embrace the dynamic diversity of Jewish traditions and identities. It’s a part of our mission! We also know there is a lot of work to be done to ensure that our community is truly radically welcoming, and we invite you to join us in this work.
Share your ANDs & challenge stereotypes.
Isn’t Judaism only a religion?
Are all Jews white?
Do all Jews eat bagels?
The answer is NO
There are Jews of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities and disabilities, belief systems, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Why do our ANDs matter? Because our Jewish values tell us:
-To be inclusive
-To use words carefully
-To show respect to all
-To practice kindness
-To seek out justice
-To try to make the world a better place for all
So how do we include everybody’s ANDs?
Don’t make assumptions about identity.
Ask respectful questions.
Let others tell you how they identify.
Use affirming pronouns.
Be open minded to other experiences.
Remember that everyone is an individual.
Be humble if you make a mistake.
Always strive to be inclusive.
