About WordPress
WordPress is a highly flexible open-source content management system (CMS) that simplifies publishing content online. It’s the most widely used content publishing platform on the web powering roughly 32% of the entire internet.
WordPress @ Elon
A collection of custom WordPress themes, templates and plugins are now available for use by any official Elon University department on the elon.edu domain. These themes allow authorized faculty and staff to easily create websites for their units that are fully responsive and optimized for mobile viewing, and follow all university brand standards and guidelines.
To ensure stability of our WordPress environment, we do not allow third party themes or plugins from external developers, agencies or vendors.
If you are a faculty member and need a website or blog for a course, Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) offers a blog service utilizing the WordPress platform. Learn more and request a blog by visiting the Blogs page in the IT Knowledge Base and/or request a consultation with TLT.
New Website Requests
To request a new website contact the Office of University Communications by filling out the project initiation form.
About this Guide
This guide was setup specifically to train content managers on how to use the CMS. If you have previous experience using WordPress most of what you do in our system will be familiar, however Elon’s WordPress system contains many customizations that will be detailed throughout this guide.
Once you’ve been given access to edit your department’s site, we ask that you use this guide to become familiar with the CMS. If you feel you require one-on-one instruction or have any additional questions, contact Chris Spires to set up a training session. If your unit has multiple content managers, it’s preferred that a group training session is scheduled.
Currently this guide contains tutorials on how to use the most common features you’ll need to build your site. Over time we’ll update the guide to contain a more exhaustive list of all the features available to you.
